Winter planting for summer eating

Now is a fantastic time to plant strawberries. You won't see the berries till summer but like most plants it's important to get them settled and established if you want success. Mr C has been round and weeded elderly clients vege gardens today and after a quick trip to www.harrisons.co.nz, planted strawberries, lettuce and spinach with the help of Maisy - who is adored by this client.

5 Steps to Strawberry Planting Success

  • Choose a spot in full sun. Prepare your soil with organic matter like compost and sheep pellets.

  • Add a layer of strawberry mix to plant into. Strawberry planting time is from June-November in New Zealand.

  • Feed your strawberries every four weeks to replenish nutrients.

  • Keep your strawberries well watered.

  • Protect your strawberries with strawberry straw to keep their roots moist and keep fruit off the soil.

IN A NUTSHELL - plant strawberries, spinach and lettuce now. Put time and effort into preparing the soil, using sheep pellets, vege mix and strawberry fertilizer. Remember strawberries like water and need nourishment like most plants as they form a fruit.
